Natural Gems of the South Caucasus

Today we’re going to tell you about the amazing South Caucasus region which is a real heaven for beautiful nature lovers. So many beautiful places and natural gems are hidden among the majestic Caucasus Mountains. We have done extensive research and are ready to tell you about the most awe-inspiring natural corners of the region. So, let’s go!


Lake Sevan

Small Armenia is a real treasury of natural monuments. One of them is, of course, Lake Sevan – the largest freshwater lake in the country and the CIS. Moreover, it is one of the largest freshwater alpine lakes in the world. Sevan, or the Gegham Sea, is located in the center of the Armenian Highlands, surrounded by the Gegham mountain range.

The origin of the lake is volcanic; the water surface area is 940 Тhe depth of Sevan reaches up to 95 meters. The main inhabitants of the lake are trout and whitefish. By all sides, the lake is surrounded by the natural reserve, the flora and fauna of which is protected by the state.

Vorotan Gorge

Vorotan River Gorge can be considered the most popular and most picturesque place in Armenia with confidence. The area is known for its main historical monuments and natural attractions.

Vorotan gorge, or the Grand Canyon, is located in the Syunik region. Its depth is 100 meters; in some places the width of the gorge reaches 3 km. At the edge of the gorge, there is one of the most important medieval monuments – Tatev Monastery which can be reached by the longest cable car in the world.

Trchkan Waterfall

Trchkan Waterfall is considered one of the most impressive natural phenomena in the country. Being the highest Armenian waterfall, it got the second name “Armenian Niagara”.

The name of the waterfall is associated with the trout dwelling in the river of Chichkhan. The trout, while spawning, swim against the current and jump off the waterfall. Locals, seeing this miracle, call the waterfall “Trchkan” (jumping).


The fantastic nature of this country attracts travelers from all over the world. Just google natural corners of Georgia and you will be speechless. We won’t be able to cover all the Georgian gems in one article, but we will try to highlight the most astonishing of them. Thus let’s go:

Sataplia Cave

This karst cave is located on the territory of the reserve Sataplia, near the city of Kutaisi. The reserve is known not only for a unique cave, but also for dinosaur footprints found nearby.

Sataplia Cave was discovered at the beginning of the XX century. Only 300 meters are available for visits, but the total length of the cave is more than 900 meters. For greater attractiveness, stalactites and stalagmites are illuminated with different colors. It all looks so magical.

Okatse Canyon

Another unique natural landmark in Georgia is the Okatse Canyon with its wildlife. The canyon became popular among tourists after the territory received the status of a National Park.

Okatse Canyon is located in the west of the country, in Imereti, near the city of Kutaisi. The Okatse River flows through the gorge.

A canyon with a depth of 50 meters and a length of 16 kilometers consists of the upper and lower parts. The most interesting thing in the park is a suspension bridge on top of the canyon, where you can enjoy the most breathtaking view of the entire canyon.

Lake Tobavarchkhili

Lake Tobavarchkhili is one of the unique places in Georgia. The lake is not a popular destination for tourists and only those with skills can overcome the ascent of several kilometers. Nevertheless, this natural landmark is worth all the challenges.

The lake is located in Megrelia, among the Samegrelo Mountains, at an altitude of 2650 meters. The lake was formed in the crater of an extinct volcano. The water of the lake shines with silver, which is why the lake is called Silver.

Shakuransky Falls

Shakuransky Falls are located in the east of Abkhazia, in the Shakuransky gorge. The waterfall is a picturesque cascade of four waterfalls. The height of the cascade is 250 meters. The unique beauty of the waterfall is hidden behind the rocks. The water flows onto a cone-shaped large blue rock, which has become smooth due to water flows and resembles a stalagmite.

During the dry season, the lower niches of the cascade turn into a thin stream of water, but the uppermost part of the waterfall is always filled with warm water. The whole territory of the waterfall and the road captures with its beauty. This is the real treasure of Georgia.


Finally, we come to the last country of the Caucasus region. Azerbaijan nature, partly wild and deserted and partly covered with the remains of ancient forests, is a never-ending marvel for any traveller.

Mud Volcanoes

Mud volcanoes are the most popular natural attraction in Azerbaijan. There are about 800 mud volcanoes around the world; almost half of them are located on the territory of Azerbaijan.

The most visited are mud volcanoes in the Gobustan reserve. Volcanoes in the reserve are small and safe.

Lake Goygol

Lake Goygol is located in the west of the country, in the territory of the Goygol National Park. The lake was formed due to an earthquake that destroyed part of the gorge of the Akhsu River.

The uniqueness of the lake is the virgin nature surrounding Goygol and clear water that you can even drink. It is not quite suitable for swimming. The water temperature even in summer is no more than +17.

Burning Mountain Yanardag

Another unique phenomenon in Azerbaijan is the burning mountain Yanardag. On the Absheron peninsula, the slope of the mountain is in flames all year round. Fire is a consequence of exposure to oxygen with natural gas emerging from the earth. No water or sand can put out the fire.

Because of the mystical phenomenon, for a long time the mountain was considered sacred, and pilgrims came to the eternal fire to pray.

Naftalan Medicinal Oil

The unique value of the resort Naftalan is healing oil. Here is the only source of healing oil in the world. Naftalan or “thick blood of the earth” is used to improve blood circulation, dilates blood vessels, stimulates the functions of the body as a whole, has anti-inflammatory properties, accelerates wound healing and increases metabolism.

Naftalan is a thick brown liquid with a specific odor. Due to the concentration of tar and naphthenic acids, Naftalan oil is toxic. During treatment, you must follow the rules of application and time of exposure.
