So we trust you’re convinced that Gunung Mulu National Park is a WHS that should be list tops for your Borneo travel plans, and here’s our recommendation for where you should stay when you go: the Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa!
Experience 5-star luxury in a lush tropical rainforest with Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa in Malaysia, just five minutes from Gunung Mulu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your adventure begins with a scenic trip from nearby Mulu Airport to our enchanting Sarawak resort and spa, beautifully designed in the style of ethnic longhouses. Wake up each morning in a luxurious room suspended on a walkway set in the forest. After an al fresco breakfast, discover Mulu National Park’s collection of rare birds, wildlife and exotic plants and the world-famous Mulu Caves. Then relax in our Balinese-style spa, outdoor pool or on your private balcony overlooking the rainforest or the scenic Melinau River. Our airy spaces include a spacious lobby, banquet hall, riverside bar and business center and we offer features such as gourmet dining and cultural performances, making us an unforgettable venue for events from conferences to intimate weddings.
Now, those of you reading for a while are thinking “5-star luxury … that’s a little rich for the way he claims to be efficient in his traveling, isn’t it?”
Well, first off, the accomodation choices visiting the park are extremely limited, so this resort would be on our list to consider even if we didn’t have This One Weird Trick To Stay FREE! — but, in fact, we do.
You may recall back in our Credit Card #travel Rewards post we mentioned that the Chase Marriott credit card was our hotel rewards card of choice? Well, by judicious application of the points it earns we’ve stayed at Marriotts everywhere from Albuquerque to Xiangshui Bay via 5 days in Beijing for FREE!
And FREE!, Dear Readers, is right in line with our travel budget.
And not only was our stay FREE! it was a particularly cheap form of FREE!, as it only costs 10,000 points a night to stay here, the lowest tier on the points redemption ladder. That is … rather at odds with the quality of this resort.
Going through the older reviews, there’s some mentions of the place being run down — as Marriotts go mind you, which is still better than most places we stay — but at least in the room we had, those reviews are quite throughly wrong; the place was sparkly shiny brand new to all appearances!
So we think that the current redemption rating doesn’t reflect recent renovations, and what you’ve got here is probably the best hotel redemption deal you’ll find on the planet for your Marriott points. A couple of the other guests we talked to were likewise pleasantly surprised at how nice their rooms too, so it’s not just us thinking we lucked out here.
And you really can’t beat the setting; let’s link again the video from Introducing Sparky, which was taken down by the river in front of their lounge:
Yes, indeed, nothing like coming back from your Gunung Mulu adventures to “5-star luxury.” Thoroughly recommended!
