When you’re planning to visit Sri Ksetra and/or Akauk Taung, the sensible place to use for a nearby base is the town of Pyay, and we have a recommendation for a particularly good choice of hotel for that:
There are cheaper places around town, but this one is a win not only because of its nice condo-style villas surrounding the nice garden you see there, but because of its location:
– right across the street from the river, if you want to walk along that for the evening, and also makes it nice and quiet;
– just around the next corner is the Pyay night market, and even if you’re an old hand at Asian night markets, you’re going to find small town Myanmar night markets novel, for the thanaka vendors at the very least;
– it’s on the order of a 15 minute walk to Shwesandaw Paya which is a pagoda definitely worth a visit, especially at night;
(We particularly liked the neon halo effect on this Buddha!)
– and as a bonus, from the platform you have an excellent view of Sehtatgyi Buddha:
Definitely recommend visiting at night like we did; it’s nifty enough just wandering around the pagoda lit up against the night sky, but when you look east and here’s this 10 story Buddha lit up amidst the darkness looking at you, the feeling is downright ethereal.
So when you’re planning your Myanmar trip, we were pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed our stay in Pyay; thoroughly recommend a stopover here to you as well!
