Country File: Albania

For today’s Country File we’re heading over to Europe for reviews of the Balkan Peninsula countries, and we’re starting out with the only majority Muslim country in Europe, which used to be a Stalinist redoubt on a level with North Korea, but these days is friendly and welcoming: Republika e Shqiperise, commonly known as Albania!

Flag Of Albania

Albania joined UNESCO on 16 October 1958, making it a real country by‘s standard, and it has 3 inscribed and 5 tentative World Heritage Sites:

Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe Butrint
Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastra

L’amphithéâtre de Durres
Les tombes de la Basse Selca
Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid Region
The Ancient City of Apollonia
The Castle of Bashtova

TCC and MTP count Albania as one place.

Top Albanian travel tip: If you’re planning a driving tour of the Balkans, renting a car in Albania gives you the most flexibility — you can drive anywhere in the region with it except Serbia. If you rent a car in Kosovo, you can only drive it to Kosovo and Albania. And if you rent a car anywhere else, you can’t drive it into Kosovo or Albania.

p dir=”ltr”>(Mind you, this is “can drive” in the sense of it’s possible to get insurance for your rental car for those countries — but make sure beforehand than your car rental service will actually provide it!)
